Artist's Statement
“As a young emerging female artist, I have found feminism to be at the core of my work, continually shaping my artistic practice. I find a lot of solace in feminist art and poetry, and believe that one of the most powerful ways to confront injustice is through community and shared stories. For me, art is more than just a means of expression-it is a statement, a way to communicate what words alone often cannot. When the issues women face no longer exist, we will no longer need to make art about them.
To evoke a sense of unease, I created images of masculine figures lurking in shadows, varying in scale to heighten their impact. My goal was to establish an unsettling dynamic between viewer and subject—one that reflects the discomfort many women experience daily. This concept extended beyond the artwork itself and into its placement. By positioning a small print of one of my pieces beneath a chain-link fence in a city alley, I reinforced this sense of hidden tension. The figure, partially obscured in shadow, exists on the periphery just as these moments of harassment and intrusion often do. Whether it's catcalling, being followed, or feeling the weight of an unwanted stare, these experiences are difficult to articulate to those who haven't endured them. Fear, unease, and vulnerability are the emotions I sought to capture not just through the creation of this piece, but through its placement as well.” -Grace Larkin
